First read this as a child, the story of a couple who went off-grid long before hippies or hipsters did so. They find themselves adopted by a full-grown whitetail buck named Peter. There are generations born, deaths -- yes, there is an episode of hunters, not graphic but very upsetting to the couple who consider these wild creatures to be family. One learns things about life in the North Woods more vividly than anything I was ever taught in my excellent schools. My mother is 82 and fading. Recently she said, "I'd like to read 'Gift of the Deer' one more time." That says a lot about the book.(Thanks to Amazon and a third-party seller, Mom is getting her wish.)
