I bought this bike for my son’s seventh birthday. He’s been riding unassisted since he was 3, so even though he is a little small for this bike I knew he could handle it. Seven year olds on the bigger side would probably fit this bike fine. This hike had the important stuff I wanted for him: dual disc brakes, front suspension, wide tires, and comfortable seat. We now live in a very rural atea with lots of hills and gravel rosds, so he loves the tires. This bike was packaged very well, but you will still want to check over the disc brakes for any damage once you pull the bike out of the box, just as a precaution. There wasn’t much assembly required, most bikes at this price level don’t require much assembly these days, and the tools are included if you don’t have your own. However, there is setup required after assembly. If you aren’t willing to adjust the disc brakes and derailleur on your own, make sure ahead of time that there is a nearby bike shop willing to do this for you prior to purchasing. We made adjustments ourselves, but having not been very into bikes as an adult and only owning simple bikes as a kid (the engineering of bicycles has come a long way!), there was some learning curve. We had to loosen the disc brake mount (loosen not remove) in order to get the front brakes adjusted properly, and then tighten the mount back on. We also had to adjust the derailleur. I was able to use an engine hoist, but I would recommend at least having a bike stand. This might be a lot more tedious having somebody hold the back end of the bike off the ground if this is your first time adjusting such equipment. Flipping the bike over would not work for this process since you need to access hand brakes and pedals. Adjustments needed on the derailleur can be very fine at times, a 1/8 turn or less. Just have that in mind if you decide to set out to do this yourself. There is a YouTube video of a guy adjusting a Shimano Tourney derailleur on a Guardian bike. The screws on that derailleur are the reverse of what you need to adjust on this derailleur, but otherwise the derailleurs are the same and the concepts are all the same.If you’re willing to do the setup work or have this bike serviced at a shop, then it’s definitely a nice bike. This will fit my son for several years if he doesn’t wreck it and we prefer to learn how to service our own equipment.
